desperate for change

If you follow the personal development scene at all, the buzz of late is about The Secret. The basic premise is that if you can visualize the result you want, you will get it.

(For the ease of keeping my prose flowing well, I will write from the point of view of a single guy, looking for a girl.)

So what does it mean for you if you’re looking for that someone special in your life? Create a mental image of her. I like writing and visualizing with words, so my personal way to do this is to create a checklist of features that she should have. I used to have a list of about 20 bullet points which I unfortunately lost due to a hard drive crash a few years ago. However, if I were to recreate the list for myself now, it would go something like this:

• shorter than me
• shoulder length hair
• smart and gorgeous
• have at least a university degree
• hypnotic eyes
• great kisser
• loves to dance
• nice behind
• speaks Cantonese
• not younger than the half-plus-seven rule
• likes boardgames
• is upbeat and positive
• non-smoker
• non-religious
• can talk with me about anything
• have life experience
• her name contains the letter A

And so on. Anything is fair game; especially physical attributes. It’s loads of fun! If you go through the items, you will also notice that some items are must-haves. For example, smoking is a deal-killer for me. Another way to organize this list of items would be to have two categories: must-have and nice-to-have. The reason for the must-have items is that you really shouldn’t be dating women who should be disqualified as per your particular situation. This saves time, effort and energy. Disqualified is a strong word to be using, but dating is really a job interview for the eventual position of wife (or husband – if you ladies are still reading). Remember – desperate, but not that desperate.

It is possible to do this exercise in your head, but having a list in a computer file is nice. You can regularly revisit it to help remind yourself of your goal. When you finally do meet the girl of your dreams, you’d be surprised at how accurate the list turn out to be.
