Libraries rule!

(I am working on a series of posts where I am trying to figure out what things are important to me. Warning – incoming nerdy post.)

When I was young, my favourite thing to do was to go to the local library and check out a bunch of books. During the summer, I was so keen that I would go and make a visit to all the branches within walking distance of our house. (By the way, I’d like to thank my Mom for getting me setup with my first library card.)

Why go to the library?

1. Cheap entertainment. With NO commercials! More “channels” than your cable TV. And of course, there were the entire collection of Tintin and Asterix comics. (By the way, some new Asterix volumes came out while I wasn’t looking!) My taste is a little bit more adult these days and I am pleased with the amount of sex and violence you can get from novels.

2. “Leveling up” opportunity. As a youth, my favourite section in the library was definitely the computer section. (I got a story about that… I forgot all about the no-talking-to-strangers thing.) These days, my reading is more varied: investing, love and relationships, cooking, travel, religion and self-help, gaming, and the occasional inspiring fiction.  And oh yeah, I still breeze through the computer section for old times sake; I now get my techie information online.

3. Calming environment. Something soothing about libraries. Well, some libraries do it more for me than others. Did I mention that I volunteered in the school library, back in the day?

I wonder if having a day job at a library would ruin my enjoyment as a library patron, lol…
